It used to be an offence to use a vehicle without insurance, but from March 2011, when Continuous Insurance Enforcement (CIE) came into effect, it is an offence to keep a vehicle without appropriate insurance, unless you have made a valid Statutory Off Road Notification (SORN) to the DVLA. The DVLA will issue fixed penalties to the registered keeper of cars where they are uninsured and not declared as being off the road.

The excess you will need to pay will depend on the level of cover you have and what type of claim you make. You can choose what voluntary excess you have when taking out your policy and if you want to amend your excess at a later date, this can only be done in conjunction with a change of vehicle or at renewal. If you have a compulsory excess, this will need to be paid in addition to your voluntary excess, so please ensure you can afford to pay the total excess in the event of a claim. Drivers aged 17-25 years old will have a higher compulsory excess to pay than those over 25. Please note, drivers who are deemed inexperienced by our insurers (i.e. who have not held a full UK/EU licence for at least a year), will also have a higher compulsory excess to pay, regardless of age. No Claims Discount (NCD) protection ensures that if you have to make a claim against your cover, the number of years NCD will not be reduced. Should you have a claim, although the number of years no claims may not be affected, your premium may still increase. Protection is available to you if you have four or more years NCD. But, if you have two fault claims in a three year period, NCD protection will be removed, and if you were to have a third fault claim in this time, your NCD will be reduced.
