Hello. AFAIK Tesco Bank may offer you a non-contactless Visa Debit card if requested. It's worth pointing out this card will be for Online Use only however. That'd mean you'd be unable to use it for buying goods on the train, to buy fuel with Pay at the Pump etc as these systems process the transaction(s) 'offline'. May I ask why you'd like non-contactless versions of your cards? I'm keen to stress that any fraudulent transactions carried out are capped at up to £30, they'd need your PIN if the terminal performs a random security check and that you'd be covered by Tesco Bank in light of such issues.
Mod edit - All debit cards are now contactless. Also, a new contactless limit of £45 (increased from £30) became available in UK retailers from 1 April 2020. -

Hi, Thank you for your reply. In answer to your question for me personally £30 is a significant amount of money to lose, even if temporarily. There's still a lag time to get the money back if card is used fraudulently. It’s inconvenient to have to go through the process of reclaiming money back. I also don’t want family members being able to take debit card, use the contactless facility and slip the card back in my purse without me noticing. I'll just have to be more vigilant! I think contactless offers better protection than using cash but having to enter a pin number every time offers an extra layer of security.

Our local police force are giving out contactless card blocking pockets which you can put your card in to stop it being read. They say this is because of the escalating fraud / theft from card holders using these contactless cards.Big warning of intelligence which suggests the xmas period will see even more scanning and stealing details in queues at cash points and checkouts.

AFAIK Banking rules say you have to offer non contactless cards? Notwithstanding any Tom bleep or Harry can buy a card reader from the dark web for £50 and fleece as many 30 quids as they can until the card holder notices.

I've received my new Tesco credit card today and unfortunately it's contactless. I called up to request a new card or to get contactless deactivated, but was surprised to be told that they couldn't do either. I have cards with other banks and have had no problem either getting a new card or have a contactless one deactivated.
When will you be bringing yourselves up to speed with other UK banks and offering non-contactless cards ? -

Hi Abright, currently we cannot offer non-contactless cards however I understand your concerns and would like to log your comments in our feedback system. So I can do this, please private message with your full name, DOB and postcode. Please leave a space between all the characters in your DOB and postcode or the message won’t come through to us. We introduced contactless cards on the back of feedback received from our customers, we do review and take feedback seriously but can't guarantee a non-contactless card will be released. -

I have just received my new credit card today and am gutted it is contactless - i think i have been with Tesco credit card for about 15 years and now as they refuse to offer non contactless options i am going to have to go elsewhere. I have my main bank account with Halifax who give customers the option of contactless or not as do many other banks. I am very surprised Tesco have taken choice away from their customers at a time when most companies are trying to keep hold of their valued customers. I have tried to contact Tesco to discuss this to see if there is an option but was forced to search online as their lines are very busy - no doubt with people phoning up about their new contactless cards.

I don't want contactless on my CC either and am very dissapointed being told that I can't turn it off on my card. I will stop using Tesco CC till they sort this out. Their loss not mine as I have lots of other CC I can use with pin only.

04-07-17, 12:45Johnkm_639Re: Deactivate contactless on debit / credit card
Due to an attempted fraudulent activity on my Tesco credit card, I had to be issued with a new one. But when it arrived, I was extremely angry to find this was a ‘contactless’ card, which I had never requested and absolutely did not want under any circumstances with its’ known security issues. Particularly so, as I had enough hassle with the security breach on my original card, without adding a whole new way to at least double the chances of it happening again!! I think Tesco forget that, while the money is refunded, the card has to be replaced as well, with all the hassle that entails, which includes having to mess around re-registering card verify in middle of trying to order something and, any standing orders on the original card. This left me with two options, cancel the card or, (as I had nothing to lose and like a challenge ) find a way to ‘neuter’ the contactless circuity, without messing up normal chip & pin payments. I should also add that also don’t like being told that I have to accept something that I don’t want!!Therefore, anyone who wishes to neuter their Contactless Tesco credit card, all you need is a Junior hacksaw (or other fine cutting saw) and follow my instruction below.Further information is available here, including how to neuter any other contactless card:https://www.instructables.com/member...instructables/https://community.tescobank.com/imag...09175D7B01.jpg

Hi @Johnkm_639, thanks for getting in touch and I'm sorry that you're unhappy with our contactless cards. While your technique will stop the contactless functionality on your card, it can also cause structural damage which can lead to the card needing to be replaced before the renewal date.
We'll make sure to pass on your comments about the cards to our Credit Card team, as they review all the feedback about the cards and the services we provide. -
05-07-17, 09:34Johnkm_639Re: Deactivate contactless on debit / credit card
Thank you your reply, but not where I cut it, as there is nothing near the location of the cut to upset normal operation and please note that I am an Electrics Engineer and I know ‘contactless’ operation is nowhere near secure enough. Therefore, I was going to close my account if I hadn't succeeded, so I had nothing to lose by trying this. However, I do have a suggestion that will allow you to provide a card that satisfies both types of customer and in particular, not seriously annoy those who don't want anything to do with contactless:If you go to this article on the Instructables web site:http://www.instructables.com/id/Disa...n-Debit-Cards/ You will see an X-ray image of the antenna tracks on the authors card (not Tesco) and one of the tracks goes via the bottom right corner of that card. All it would need is a dotted line to be marked on the card across that bottom right corner, allowing the customer to snip it off via the dotted line if contactless operation is not required. Simple and effective! Unfortunately, your current card doesn’t have its antenna track run down there, but I am sure this something that could be implemented without too much of a problem. PS: There is a problem with your registration confirmation email system, in that it cannot be received via the Plusnet server. I have tried about 5 times on two different Plusnet accounts and nothing, they are not even getting to the server.I only managed to receive it when I used an old Yahoo account.

Please provide an option for NON contactless credit cards. I have requested this before from a Tesco and I was issued one. But I’m told this is no longer an option!!
I use Apple Pay and don’t need this highly vulnerable and insecure payment method. What this point in offering Apple Pay then forcing contactless cards on your members.
I have other debit and credit card accounts that provide this as an option. I prefer Tesco because of the points, but I’m considering cancelling due to the weak security. -
31-08-17, 09:28ScottWRe: Deactivate contactless on debit / credit card
Thanks for your message @Stevenparrish71. Since the launch of our contactless cards, we've received feedback from our customers about the services they'd prefer and we do take all your comments on board and pass them to our Credit Card team. Currently we don't offer any non-contactless cards for our credit or debit card accounts.
While we do offer Apple Pay to our customers, not everyone has a compatible device or wishes to use the service, so it would be unfair on others to make this the only contactless option at present. -
28-09-17, 17:59PaulBMRe: Deactivate contactless on debit / credit card
My wife and I have just received our new Tesco credit cards with contactless enabled. I was straight on the phone to customer services to get it disabled, but apparently because of a survey that suggested that 'the majority of their customers wanted contactless' we all have to follow suit. Very short sighted by Tesco Bank in my opinion. Now that it seems we have no option but to have contactless on our Tesco Bank credit cards, my question to you all is, does anyone know of a bank that offers optional contactless cards?
-
31-10-17, 11:57patpriorRe: Deactivate contactless on debit / credit card
I was also shocked to find that I cannot request a contactless card. I have seen enough media about cloning contactless cards that I will be very reluctant to use my new card when it arrives. The security on it needs to be much more robust before I will be happy to use it. I hope Tesco will get their act together and give this option shortly. I have just changed my Waitrose card for one that is not Contactless so will probably use that in future until Tesco produce an alternative.

If I had dropped a non-Contactless theft could not have happened so quickly with a PIN only card. In what universe do banks force unsafe plastic on customers?????Contactless is like handing over an open wallet with sections containing £30 in each??? Fortunately, I got home and checked on-line within an hour - saw the fraudulent transactions. But it still took two phone calls, lengthy security and a wait of several days for a new card.A PIN card might have been handed in to the store's Customer Services - much less hassle to retrieve. I like the suggestion that a dotted line could mark a safe place to cut the Contactless feature. Please give Customers a CHOICE !!! -
21-12-17, 09:25ScottWRe: Deactivate contactless on debit / credit card
I completely understand your position and I'll make sure to pass on your comments. In terms of the fraudulent transactions, was the money refunded back into the credit card account?
We are aware that some customers feel more vulnerable with cards that have contactless functionality, but in a case where a card is dropped and found, it's equally likely that someone could use the card online or try to use it over the phone. This is why we protect all transactions and refund all fraudulent activity, no matter how the card is used. -

I'm really sorry to read about how disappointed you are . We do pass on all the comments and feedback we get about our products, and I'm sorry that you feel that we aren't listening. As a business, we keep trying to offer the services that our customers ask for, and we received a lot of demand from customers asking for contactless cards as they became a standard throughout the industry. How we protect our accounts hasn't changed, and if your card is used fraudulently, either online or in a store, your money will still be safe.

Same for us-- both our Tesco Purchases credit cards arrived ----- ! "contactless",which we don't want. Rang Tesco --- they only supply these contactless ones so I cut off the corner of mine---- it breaks the " contactless" feature, but still enables " chip and pin" in the store . I am happy, but hubby wants it disabled " unnoticeably" --- as he did not like the corner cut off his and sent for a new one ! Is there an "unnoticeable" way to disable his , as he is very careless about security----before we are scammed out of house and home ??!!PS----I have not tried any of our " disabled" cards in an ATM yet and would love to know if it will work , or will it swallow them?

16-08-18, 10:12Anon-a-mouseRe: Deactivate contactless on debit / credit card
it would help if you guys would be honest about the risk.. The limit is £30 PER TRANSACTION, UNTIL WE DISCOVER THE ISSUE AND NOTIFY THE BANK. The risk is NOT capped at £30. As both a customer and shareholder, I am angry that you do not provide customers with the choice, as there is a true risk to this technology..Whose life is so important that they cant afford the few seconds it takes to enter their PIN for each transaction? If they want to do that, fine.. it should be their choice. Just as it should be my choice if i chose not to. Having just received my replacement credit card, which is contactless, I will be closing my account. I want a complaint registered as a customer. I will also be writing in as a shareholder to complain. regards

CarolineM thank you for your reply. I think that you are obliged under banking rules to issue non-contactless credit cards if requested. I will stop using my card as soon as I can get a relacement card from another supplier. Unless I can find a way of disabling it.

06-02-19, 15:29Johnkm_639Re: Deactivate contactless on debit / credit card
It is perhaps worth reiterating my solution to the neutering of the Tesco contactless cards: See my post dated 04/07/2017, or go to this web site:https://www.instructables.com/member...instructables/This small saw cut has done the trick on two Tesco cards and there have been no other problems since then. I have already suggested that Tesco change the design of the card so that the antenna track runs close to the bottom corner and that corner marked to indicate where it can be cut off to disable contactless operation. This is a very simple solution to this problem, as it provides a card suitable for both purposes! So why hasn't this been implemented?

I find it difficult to understand how tesco can get this so wrong. I also would like to register my disslike of this new technology thats seems to be designed as an aid to fraudsters.I would point out i am no Ludite , i was an early adopter of on line banking with First Direct, who still offer a credit card without contactless.I will follow this gentlemans instructions as i have nothing to lose by damaging the card. I'm only a user for the clubcard point advantage which has recentley become far less attractive.I may go high tech and use a dremel with a fine rotary burr.My first test will be with a basket of £120 worth of shoping at the tesco checkout, if the card gets declined i can easily walk out the door , Aldi opens next month(Hythe)- i may be first in line

Hi @puppyduck, sorry to hear about your disappointment. Although this is not something we can offer currently, I can certainly pass on your comments as customer feedback today. We always take on board feedback as we look to improve our services going forward. We wouldn't recommend destroying or defacing your card as this may prevent it from working correctly. Please rest assured that if your account was ever subject to any fraudulent activity, you would not be held liable for this.

23-02-19, 10:34puppyduck13Re: Deactivate contactless on debit / credit card
Some sucess with the dremel cure for contactless card fraud prevention. I don't have access to an xray and didn't want to spend money building a copper wire detector. The black credit card wont allow you to see any wiring when a bright LED is shone on it.`With finding suggestions that the antenna is fed from each side of the gold chip section on the card.I put a short slotted cut out each side of the gold chip , with a dremel with a fine bur tool. This was easy to control and i made sure i did not enter the black zone strip on the rear. I taped the card down to a piece of wood while i made the slots.I then when to M&S for some shoping and made a purchase with normal chip and pin number successfully, this proved the card worked and authorised the new card for use. I then attempted a contactless payement with the card , failed as the card was undetected by nthe reader. So a total success. the card works but wont for contactless. If only Tesco gave customers an option i wouldnt have to distress their card at all. See photo bellow https://community.tescobank.com/imag...25A0AEC599.jpg

Inconsistency over security .....Why persist with unsafe Contactless - while overdoing security elsewhere ? A few days ago, I tried to make a 4 figure payment out of a current account ........... to a savings account at another bank - in my own name. This payment was suspended pending a security check. The process was a nightmare - repeating the same personal details, cross-examined with multiple questions about other payments - and this payment - to an account in MY name. One might shrug shoulders and put up with the over-kill ............ but NOT while banks keep pushing patently unsafe Contactless cards - compared to PIN transactions. Please give Customers the choice.(.... and if that means marking the card with a safe place to drill a hole, that would be better than nothing.)

i am surprised that tesco do not offer a card without contactless as other banks do - i am trying to save them money - i am confused as there are several requests in this article that people email , anonymous - neither of these are complete email addresses - who do I email?
